Preservation Information
142090 was the 26th Class 142 to be preserved (in 2021). It was purchased tactically by the Wensleydale Railway originally as a source of spare parts and/or possible resale to further parties. Its last home was at Heaton (Newcastle) under Northern Rail before preservation and movement to the Wensleydale Railway. It entered preservation under its own power, utilising their active mainline connection. Its transfer brought the number of preserved Class 142's on the line to eight.

142090 was first used in April 2021 on crew training and refreshers on the railway in preparation for their reopening after the Covid-19 pandemic, and continued to operate off-peak services at the Wensleydale Railway.

As originally intended, 142090 was later sold on to another party and taken out of service.

During early 2023 it was revealed that 142090 & 142087 were involved in a departmental testing project trailing dry ice rail head treatment equipment. It was also repainted black during this period. By spring the set was being used internally on the Wensleydale Railway for testing.

Future Plans
142090 will be tested on the Wensleydale Railway and future plans involve later testing on the national network. 142090's future after the trails remains unclear.
