Class 110 (5 vehicles)
The Class 110 was an updated version of the Class 104, both classes being of a similar construction and sharing many parts. However there were less Class 110’s built and they operated in a more restricted area during their life on BR. Two batches of 3-car sets were produced, and the class are very adequately represented in preservation, with a full 3-car set from the first batch restored to original condition and a 2-car “power-twin” set from the second batch maintained with a later refurbished interior.
The twin unit has led a very steady life, remaining at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway where it sees only occasional use but is berthed undercover, ensuring longevity.
The 3-car set in contrast has led a roller coaster existance with several periods of restoration followed by use, withdrawal and storage. Originally preserved and restored at the East Lancs, and re-restored there again some years later, other periods of operation at the Wensleydale, Churnet Valley and Llangollen Railways have played a part in the story of this set.
