Preservation Information Withdrawn in September 1993, 51402 was originally preserved by Pete Waterman, appearing at the East Lancs Railway as a 3-car set with TCL 59490 & DMBS 51360 during a gala event. The details as to the exact location of the set between 1994 & 1999 are sketchy with movements between the ELR, Crewe Basford Hall yard, Crewe Heritage Centre and Crewe Carriage Sheds taking place during this time. The 3-car set was later disbanded with all three receiving new homes. 51402 was moved to the Northampton & Lamport Railway and became part of Matthew Smith’s fleet. It is at the NLR that the vehicle was paired with partner, DMBS 51367. The vehicle was also repainted into BR Green with a plain end. In 2005, the set was sold to the Blue Square Heritage Group, who relocated both vehicles to their base at the Strathspey Railway, where they immediately entered service. In October 2009, body work was carried out and a full re-paint was undertaken into BR Green with Speed Whiskers. Since then, 51402 has continued to operate all the off peak services on the Strathspey Railway with 51367, while other vehicles remain under restoration. A replacement gearbox was fitted to 51402 during 2013. During March 2014, some replacement ceiling panels were fitted to 51402's front passenger saloon. In 2019, 51402 received replacement batteries. In 2023, corrosion around the cantrail at the cab end was tackled with an intensive work week in the summer which involved removing the cab dome, repalcing much metalwork around the cab and front doorways followed by initial painting and reassembly. The set returned to traffic in time for the 2025 season making test runs in November 2024. However, it saw little use and spent most of the next 18 months receiving further repairs and a major exam.
Future Plans It is planned that 51402 will return to operating off-peak services on the Strathspey Railway with partner 51367 . The set will be increased to a historically accurate 3-car formation once the restoration of TCL 59511 is completed.
