Preservation Information
142028 was the eighth Class 142 to be preserved (in 2020). It was purchased privately for the Wensleydale Railway who had been struggling with keeping enough first generation railcars in operating condition to serve their off peak needs. Its last home was at Newton Heath (Manchester) under Northern Rail before preservation and movement to the Wensleydale Railway in February 2020. It entered preservation under its own power, driven in multiple with 142060 to its new home utilising their active mainline connection. 142028 was only narrowly preserved, as it was originally part of a batch of units intended for transport directly to Kingsbury scrapyard. However due to their being no room at the scrapyard, the set was instead stored allowing enough time for it to be saved.

142028 & 142060 became the first Class 142's to operate in preservation when, in multiple as a 4-car set, they ran services on Sunday 23rd February 2020.

In April 2021, 142028 was included in an umbrella organisation named "Wensleydale Pacer Preservation" which brought together the seven Pacer sets owned by various parties but based on the railway.

By 2022, 142028 had been withdrawn from regular service though still in an operational condition, as part of the railway's plan to release sets for restoration work.

142028 remains in store awaiting its turn for work.

Future Plans
It is planned for 142028 to be repainted before it returns to traffic.
